The Blue Monkey Initiative
The Blue Monkey initiative organizes indigo dyeing activities using indigo that is locally grown and extracted in Amsterdam to dye various fabrics. By fostering community connections through workshops and events, our project aims to introduce alternative production methods in the textile industry. We focus on zero-marginal-cost production, local production and consumption, and exploring innovative ways to add value to fashion. Through these activities, we promote sustainable garment use and a deeper connection to the textile dyeing process.
Our Mission
Blue Monkey’s mission is to promote the reuse and re-dyeing of old garments using natural indigo dye. Many people own unused garments—whether due to wear, poor fit, or outdated style. Our goal is to collect these garments and give them new life through indigo dyeing, offering a sustainable alternative to waste. This process encourages long-term garment use and helps reduce textile waste.
Community Engagement
The Blue Monkey project also aims to strengthen connections within the local community. Through collaborative dyeing activities, we strive to create shared experiences that bring neighbors together and foster a sense of belonging.
Our slogan, “Indigo Dye for Everyone,” reflects our belief that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in indigo dyeing workshops and refresh their textiles sustainably. By reconnecting people with traditional dyeing techniques, we hope to add value not only to textiles but also to the environment and the local community.
